Carbazole-based monomers, containing electron-withdrawing side groups such as trifluoromethyl and cyano were synthesized and utilized to prepare conjugated polymers with 4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DBT). First, 9-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)carbazole (3FCz) and 4-carbazol-9-yl-benzonitrile (CNCz) were prepared by reacting carbazole with 1-bromo-4-trifluoromethylbenzene and 4-bromobenzonitrile via Ullmann reaction, respectively. Next, 3FCz and CNCz were brominated and borylated, and then polymerized with DBT by Suzuki coupling reaction. The polymers were characterized by NMR, FT-IR, GC-MS, TGA, DSC and solubility measurements. In addition, optical and electrical properties were also evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-VIS spectroscopy and cyclicvoltammetry (CV). |
