Synthesis and Characterization of Melamine Foam with Silica Aerogel |

Melamine foam has been made from melamine-formaldehyde precondensate by using microwave. The foam absorbs sound reducing noise significantly with its unique three dimensional reticular open cell structure. It could be particularly used for thermal insulation and sound absorption in the construction and the transportation industries. In this study, melamine foam with silica aerogel has been synthesized using supercritical carbon dioxide drying process of wet silica gel that was obtained by soaking and removing the polymeric silica sol derived from tetraethylorthosilicate/ethanol/water via sol gel process. The microstructure of melamine foam with silica aerogel could be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the sol and the aging condition. After hybridizing with silica aerogel the thermal conductivity of the foam was much improved. The degree of thermal conductivity of silica aerogel hybrid foams in the range of 0.018 ~ 0.029 W/mK was lower than the melamine foam of 0.033 W/mK. |
