Rhodamine B (RhB) is a widely used and studied dye. The photoluminescent emission of RhB is structure-dependent. That is, under an excitation at 365 nm, the lactone form of RhB exhibits a blue-light emission, and the acid form does a yellow-light emission. The transformation between the lactone and acid forms of RhB is environment-dependent. RhB molecular aggregates in nanoscale domains might possess both the lactone and acid forms of RhB, so as to result in a mixture of blue and yellow light emissions. White light emission could be obtained with tuning the intensities of the containing nanoparticles. Both inorganic and organic RhB-containing nanoparticles have been prepared. RhB molecules attach to the nanoparticles with chemical bonding and physical absorption. All the nanoparticles exhibit white-light PL emission under an excitation at 365 nm. Moreover, the application of the nanoparticles as cell-labelling agents has been examined. This work has demonstrated a simple approach to prepare white-light PL materials with one fluorescent dye. |
