For the realization of next generation IT, low-loss polymeric waveguide (LLPW) materials are essential. The LLPW materials need to retain materials requirement such as low optical propagation loss, thermal stability at operation temperature, precise refractive index controllability, and low birefringence. Many organic polymers have been investigated for these purposes. Among them, fluorinated polyimides have been considered as good potentials for use in photonic devices, due to their high thermal stability, humidity resistance, as well as low optical loss in the wavelength (1.3 and 1.5 μm) region of optical communication. However, their relatively large optical birefringence limited their applications. In order to overcome these problems, we have designed and synthesized novel fluorinated polyimides with 3-D controlled structure by introducing bulky perfluorinated aromatic pendant group in the diamine and the flexible group in the main chain. In this presentation, we will discuss the synthesis and characterization of novel fluorinated polyimides with 3-D controlled structure.
