In this study, the polymer particles having micro (3um~7um) size were prepared using so-called emulsion-aggregation process. In a polymerization process, a random block copolymer of styrene, butyl acrylate (BA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization. An amphiphilic macromonomer, such as PEG-EEM, was used during emulsion polymerization, not only as a stabilizer but also as a comonomer. In an aggregation process, the effects of pH, amount of electrolyte, shear rate, and temperature on the size and shape of the particles were investigated. Also, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) and molecular weight of the latex had a significant effect on controlling the size and shape of the latexes. The structures of the polymer particles were also investigated by using transmission electron microscope. |
