Neutrophils fulfill their role through several cellular mechanisms, including phagocytosis. They also form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a reticulated scaffold structure composed primarily of a DNA backbone and several functional proteins. NETs exert their anti-infective activity by trapping invading pathogens and killing them through virulence factor secretion. However, under serious disease conditions such as sepsis or cancer, NETs could trigger adverse reactions in the body, such as inducing tissue damage or providing shelter for dormant cancer metastasis, thereby exacerbating the disease. To effectively reduce NET-related harmful conditions and treat the diseases, we developed a long-lasting DNase-1 nanoparticle to effectively cleave NETs, thereby reducing NET-related adverse effects and helping to effectively treat various diseases. |
