제목 The effect of feed spacer on biofouling in RO membrane process
초록 Feed spacer is one of the elements equipped in spiral wound reverse osmosis (RO) module for the space of flow feed water. Recently, the point of feed spacer has been at issue for the mechanism and the control of membrane fouling. The presence of feed spacer can influence biofouling on RO membrane due to generating closely turbulent flow which might hinder both microorganism attachments and biofilm growth onto membrane surface. The previous studies focused on the extent of biofouling on the feed spacer and barely investigated the effect of feed spacer on permeate flux reduction caused by biofouling occurrences. In this study, biofouling experiment was performed by lab-scale cross-flow RO membrane system equipped with feed spacer. The changes of permeate flux and the bacterial concentration on both membrane surface and feed spacer were observed in the presence or absence of feed spacer.
