Chromium, one of the hazardous heavy metals, is released in wastewater from various industrial processes. In particular, hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)) ions can be accumulated in the body and have harmful effect. Lignin has functional groups which are capable for physical or chemical bonding to other molecules. Therefore, lignin is considered as an alternative inexpensive adsorbent for removal of heavy metals. However, lignin is difficult to fabricate into the forms for removal of heavy metal. Therefore, we considered alginate as supporting material which has gel-bead forming capability. In this study, we prepared lignin/alginate blend beads and the optimum condition was established by varying the blend ratio. To analyze the properties, FE-SEM, EDS, and UV-Vis spectrometry are carried out. In addition, their adsorption behaviors were identified under various factors. As a result, it can be concluded that the lignin/alginate beads are high potential adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) ions. |
