The phase behavior of the conjugated copolymers comprised of fluorene and thiophene moieties, poly-9,9’-dioctylfluorene-alt-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (PFTT) and poly-9,9’-dioctylfluorene-alt-bithiophene (PFT2), is examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). They show good thermal stability, and display unique phase transition behavior between the crystalline and liquid-crystalline (LC) states. The annealed film of PFTT exhibits a birefringent fluid phase, indicative of its thermotropic nematic liquid-crystallinity. The crystallization of the polymers is further confirmed by film X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, in which PFTT shows a better thermotropic alignment than PFT2. Through further research into the LC properties of the polymers, their possible applications in organoelectronic devices will be presented. |
