Substituent Effects on Microstructure of Initial Reaction Products of Polyalkylsilsesquioxanes |

Polysilsesquioxanes (PSSQs), [RSiO3/2]n, are becoming important as low-dielectric insulators in microelectronic devices. However, their exact structures have not been fully understood yet. The initial structures of oligomeric products are very important, because they provide an important insight into the structures and molecular weights of polymer products. We synthesized low molecular weight PSSQs with different alkyl substituents (R= propyl, trifluoropropyl) through acid catalyzed hydrolysis-condensation reactions. Then, the detailed structures of oligosilesquioxanes were observed by graphite plate laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (GPLDI-TOF-MS). Different tendency in hydrolysis and intramolecular versus intermolecular condensation was found to result in different microstructures and properties. |
