Fabrication and characterization of ultrafiltration membranes having hydrophilic and antibacterial properties by blending aminated polyethersulfone and acid treated carbon nano-onions |

To make hydrophilic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane, aminated polyethersulfone (PES-NH2) was synthesized via nitration and nitro reduction of polyethersulfone. Carbon nano-onions (NO) was prepared by the annealing of nano-diamonds(ND). Then, NO was acid treated (NO-COOH) to enhance dispersibility and antibacterial properties. Ultrafiltration membranes composed of PES/PES-NH2/NO-COOH were fabricated using a non-solvent-induced phase separation process. membrane exhibited greater hydrophilic properties than PES membrane with increasing weight percent of PES-NH2. Aminated PES powder was detected by FT-IR(ATR) spectroscopy and XPS. And Formation of NO was confirmed by XRD and TEM. XPS analyses were conducted to confirm the formation of the NO-COOH and contents of oxygen in the NO-COOH. Fabricated membrane exhibited higher water flux than PES membrane and showed antibacterial properties because of acid treated NO. |
