Electro-spinning of polystyrene-polypropylene fiber for ion exchange application |

Electro-spinning of polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and PS-PP blend were conducted for ion exchange application. The process parameters including electrical field and needle tip to collector distances (TCD) were investigated. The morphology of micron-fibers electro-spun fibers was indentified with a field emission scanning electron microscope. The fibers have average diameters in the range 1µm - 10µm. The applied voltages of 20 kV-25 kV and TCD of 15 cm and 25 cm were obtained. The porous fibers made from PS-PP bi-component had internal pores of about 100 ~ 800 nm. The miscibility of PS-PP blend fibers was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction (XRD) determined the crystallinity of the membrane and tensile strength for evaluation physical properties. Such features those posses a very high surface to volumn ratio could be exploited for many uses as a membrane for ion exchange applications, catalyst or in the preparation of pore filters. |
