Bone defects affect millions of people each year with various reasons. For the regeneration of bone defects, polymeric hydrogels are utilized as ideal biomaterial scaffolds due to their tunable physical properties and injectability. In bone development, calcium ion (Ca2+) is a critical element to enhance bone tissue mineralization and matrix mineralization, and hyperoxia stimulates the cells through acute oxidative stress. Herein, we report calcium peroxide (CaO2)-mediated gelatin hydrogels for dual delivery of Ca2+- and O2. We demonstrate that the hydrogels release hyperoxic oxygen and Ca2+, and exhibit adjustable phase transition time and mechanical properties depending on the polymer and CaO2 concentration. Moreover, the hydrogels show excellent cytocompatibility and increased proliferative activity against pre-osteoblast. In conclusion, our Ca2+- and O2-releasing hydrogels hold great potential as a promising biomaterial for the facilitated bone regeneration. |
