The colorimetric sensors are widely studied and applied in various industrial and medical applications because of simple, direct, and inexpensive detection of stimuli. Here, we report a thermoresposnive smart colorimetric patch based on the poly(isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels decorated with plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). By optimizing the size and density of AuNPs on PNIPAM microgels, the smart colorimetric patch showed a large and quick extinction peak shift (92 nm in 5 s) due to the thermoresponsive plasmon resonance change from individual to coupled AuNPs on PNIPAM microgels. In addition, the AuNP-on-PNIPAM microgels were embedded in thin hydrogel matrix to fabricate flexible, attachable, and durable colorimetric patches. For a potential application, a hand-shaped actuator was fabricated with finely tuned transition temperature of PNIPAM microgels (31.9-44.8°C), which enables sequential changes of fingertip color and finger movements as the temperature changes. |
