Compared to conventional fluorescent dyes, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have many strengths and merits, for example, high fluorescence signal, high quantum yield (QY), photostability, and narrow emission spectrum. As a consequence, QDs are widely used to combine with many biomaterials. However, the toxicity of QDs limits the application of the biological field. To inhibit the toxicity, QDs were usually encapsulated with silica shell. However, the QY of QDs is remarkably lowered when coated with a layer of silica. To solve this problem, we have developed a water-soluble multi-shell QDs that maintains a high QY even though the surface is coated by a layer of silicon. Multi-shell QDs have higher fluorescence intensity and higher stability in various pH range (pH 2 – 7) compared to single shell QDs. Besides, the QY of multi-shell QDs decreases slightly after surface modification. As a result, this water-soluble multi shell QDs have a great potential for biological imaging in practice. |
