C-phycocyanin, a natural protein, has advantages of biocompatibility and photodynamic properties, but has a problem of non-specific distribution in the body. With the aim to increase tumor specificity, we prposed hyaluronic acid-conjugated phycocyanin nanoparticles (HA-PC NPs) as photodynamic therapeutic agents. HA-PC NPs had an average size of 296.12±5.6 nm and were prepared in a spherical shape with a rough surface. The HA-PC NPs generated effectively reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 635 nm laser irradiation. Although no cytotoxicity was observed with HA-PC NPs, it induced photodynamic therapy-mediated cytotoxicity in CT26 cells under laser irradiation. In particular, HA-PC NPs effectively accumulated on the surface of CT26 cells, but their accumulation decreased upon HA pretreatment, indicating that HA-PC NPs specifically targeted cancer cells. Thus, we believe that HA-PC NPs could become an attractive nano-platform for tumor targeted photodynamic therapy. |
