Thermally Reversible Polymer Networks for Scratch-Resistance and Scratch-Healing Automotive Clear-Coat |

This study investigated the applicability of reversible Diels-Alder (DA)/retro-DA based scratch-healing system to automotive clear-coats. The furan-maleimide adduct diisocyanate-based crosslinking agent was synthesized, and systematically compared with commercially available crosslinking agent (DA-CL and C-CL). Thermally reversible crosslinking and de-crosslinking structures at DA and retro-DA temperatures were demonstrated using in-situ oscillatory rheology measurements. Simultaneously, it was monitored using an FT-IR connected to the rheometer. Furthermore, the scratch-resistance and self-healing ability were quantitatively analyzed using a nano-scratch tester equipped with optical microscopy and AFM. As a result, the DA-CL polymer network exhibited superior scratch-healing performance as well as scratch-resistance to the C-CL. This indicates that the DA-functioned self-healable polymer network had potential to be repeatable scratch-healing for automotive clear-coat system. |
