제목 All-iron aqueous redox flow battery using iron/Bis-tris methane complex as a anolyte redox-active material
초록 The redox flow battery (RFB) is one of the most promising candidates for the large-scale battery energy storage system. Among various RFB systems, all-iron RFBs, which use iron-based materials for both the catholyte and anolyte, have advantages in electrolyte price and adjustable cell potential. In a previous study, iron/3-[bis (2-hydroxyethyl) amino]-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid(DIPSO) complex(Fe(DIPSO)) was suggested as an anolyte active material for the all-iron aqueous RFB to alternate the iron/triethanolamine(TEA) complex(Fe(TEA)) which is unstable because of its side reaction. However, the Fe(DIPSO) has nearly the same potential as the Fe(TEA), and the DIPSO ligand is expensive. To increase the overall cell voltage and use a cheaper ligand, the Bis-tris methane(BIS-TRIS) was used as a ligand for the iron-based metal-organic complex. Various chemical and electrochemical analyses confirmed that the iron/BIS-TRIS complex has more negative potential than Fe(TEA) complex and does not produce any side reactions. Also, RFBs using Fe(BIS-TRIS) have higher performance and stability, while the low cost of BIS-TRIS leads to the economic benefit of RFBs.
