Water pollution due to heavy metal ions has become a serious problem since they are found to be highly toxic to human health. Recently, chemically-polymerized phenylenediamine, possessing multiple amine functional groups and high thermal stability, have been studied as adsorbents to remove dyes or heavy metal ions from water. In this study, we successfully synthesized the polymer of m-phenylenediamine (poly(m-PDA)) using laccase enzyme originated from Trametes versicolor under environmentally-friendly condition without using any toxic chemicals. The synthesized polymers was verified as an effective adsorbent to several heavy metal ions (Pb2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, and Co2+). Secondly, we are also trying to develop a specific adsorbent which can selectively remove specific heavy metal ion interfered with other metal ions in waster. We used a peptide-based adsorbent where the 7-mer peptide having a specific affinity to Pb2+ was combined with magnetic-core bead. The formulated adsorbent is being tested for the selective removal of Pb2+ from water. |
