In a recent study, polyelectrolyte microcapsules have been fabricated in one step through immediate complexation of polyelectrolytes at the interface of a double emulsion drop. However, the direct contact between the two adjacent phases with complementary polyelectrolytes often results in clogging due to lack of control in the reaction rate. In this work, we prepare polyelectrolyte microcapsules by utilizing triple emulsion drops with an intermediate layer as templates. The intermediate layer prevents clogging from occurring by delaying the complexation. We also confirm the robustness and versatility of this approach by demonstrating that polyelectrolyte microcapsules that respond to various stimuli such as pH, osmotic pressure can be prepared for drug delivery application. |
