Cypress woods which were coated respectively with boric acid (BA4), ammonium pentaborate (APB4), and BA4/APB4 additives were examined for combustion gases. Each of the specimens was coated with a 4 wt% solution of boron compounds three times. Dried at room temperature, combustion gas was analyzed by using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The smoke performance index (SPI) of the specimens coated with the boron compound increased by 1.04 to 1.5 times and the smoke growth index (SGI) decreased by 17.6% to 41.0% compared with uncoated specimen. The smoke intensity (SI) of BA4 and APB4 specimens was obtained to be 3.4% to 30.7% lower than that of uncoated specimens, resulting in lower smoke and smoke hazards. |
