Rare earth ion garnet have been widely studied over years because of their unique magnetic, magneto-optical, thermal, electrical properties such as radiation damage resistance, high thermal conductivity, high electrical resistivity. To study the role of rare earth ion on the magnetic and optical properties in rare earth ion garnet, yttrium substituted erbium ion garnet (Y:ErIG) has been synthesized by solid state reaction. We prepared a series of Er3-xYxFe5O12 with x = 0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 2.8 and studied their structural properties using X-ray diffraction. All examined samples exhibit a cubic structure with I a 3 d. We found that the volume of the unit cell slightly changed with Y concentrations, indicating that Y atoms replaced Er atoms in the dodecahedrons of Er ion garnet (ErIG). We checked Curie temperatures of a series of Er3-xYxFe5O12 as a function of Y concentration using DSC measurements. Our study shows that the structural, magnetic and optical properties of Y substituted ErIG changed gradually with Y substitution. |
