The structural and magnetic transport properties of manganite-based superlattices were investigated using La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) and LaMnO3 (LMO) magnetic layers as stacking layers. All the superlattices were fabricated by employing laser-MBE method. The layer-by-layer growth of LSMO/LMO superlattices and their stacking periodicity were controlled by monitoring the RHEED pattern. Analysis of synchrotron XRD patterns indicated that the LSMO/LMO superlattices had well-defined structures. The superlattice patterns were compared with the calculated patterns based on the one-dimensional step model. Although the resistivity under various magnetic fields showed that all the superlattices exhibited metallic-to-insulating transitions (MIT) near Tc and were ferromagnetic, insulating behaviors appeared again at low temperatures for the superlattices having their stacking periodicity shorter than a certain critical value. We propose that under a certain critical thickness the t2g electron-rich ferromagnetic insulating phase becomes dominant, thereby showing only insulating behavior. Additionally, it is supported by some calculations using effective parallel resistor model. |
