Dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and fluorinated azobenzene moieties: Photo-Induced Phase Transition Behaviors of New Dimesogenic Liquid Crystalline Molecules |

The liquid crystalline (LC) properties of two series of non-symmetric dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and ring fluorinated azobenzene mesogenic moieties interconnected by 10 oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared. Both series showed an odd-even dependence of the isotropization temperature on the spacer length. We also demonstrate a novel example of photo-induced phase transition behaviors in a new dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and fluorinated azobenzene moieties. Their photo responsive activities were well-demonstrated by UV irradiation. Smectic region broadening is occurred in the cell with polyimide by low intensity UV light. |
