We propose a novel method to generate surfactant-free micropolymer particles with a narrow size distribution using the piezo-electric inkjet method. As the droplets of a polymer solution are periodically generated in the air through the inkjet nozzle, the rapid evaporation of volatile solvent contained in each droplet leads to highly porous particles with extremely low density particles, called micropolymofoam. The particles are essentially kinetically stable and their morphology can be further converted into a thermodynamically stable form by swelling them in a suitable solvent environment. In addition, the pore size of particles can be finely tuned, in which one polymer phase of kinetically stable particles composed of two different polymers is selectively elimated by the hydrolysis reaction. |
