제목 Preparation and properties of sulfonated polyimide copolymers based on new sulfonated diamine and naphthalenic dianhydride as proton exchange membrane for fuel cell
초록 Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) seem to be the most promising power source for transportation, stationary power, lap top computers and cell phones because it can provide high power density without pollution. The current commercially available PEM materials is a sulfonated fluorocopolymer produced Du Pont called Nafion. Although the membrane has high mechanical, thermal and chemical stability along with good conductivity at low temperature (0.1 S/cm at room temperature), its several drawbacks such as a drastic reduction in conductivity at elevated temperatures (low humidity) eg. above 80 ℃ due to loss of water, and high methanol crossover through the membrane decrease the cell efficiency. Therefore, the development of new ionomer membranes that will overcome some or all of the problems of these current PEM fuel cell systems is a necessity.
At the meeting, we will present the synthesis and characterization of a new sulfonated diamine and its corresponding sulfonated polyimides with an improved solubility by introducing ether linkages and sulfone group into the polymer backbone. The sulfonated polyimides has been prepared from bis(naphthalic anhydrides) and aromatic sulfonated /unsulfonated diamines to control the degree of sulfonation. The properties of the sulfonated polyimides for proton exchange membrane fuel cell will be also discussed.
