Mesoporous molybdenum oxide (MoO3-x) was synthesized by using a soft template method. The soft template method is based on a new amphiphilic double comb copolymer, i.e., Polyvinylidene chloride-graft-poly(2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PVDC-g-PHEA) synthesized via simple ATRP (Atomic Transfer Radical Polymerization). The amphiphilic PVDC-g-PHEA, composed of a hydrophobic PVDC backbone and a hydrophilic HEA chain, promotes self-assembly producing mesoporous structure. Furthermore, thermal reduction of molybdenum oxide at Ar atmosphere created oxygen vacancies which is favorable change in the adsorption behavior of hydrogen atoms on their neighboring Mo atoms. The as-synthesized MoO3-x was characterized by using FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and XPS. The MoO3-x electrode achieved high HER activity which lowered overpotential and Tafel slope at alkaline electrolyte. |
