Shape memory polymer (SMP) is a smart material which can recover to its original shape after being deformed into a temporary shape when it receives stimuli. Polymer blending is an effective way to develop a new SMP with desired performance properties. In this study, zinc neutralized poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid)(Zn-EAA) ionomer/poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL) blends were prepared by a melt blending in an internal mixer. The Zn-EAA/PCL blends exhibit thermally-triggered triple shape memory effects, in which ionic clusters of EAA ionomer provides stable netpoints, and crystalline domains of EAA and PCL act as two different reversible phase. Effects of blend composition on thermo-mechanical properties and shape memory behavior were characterized by DSC, DMA, and tensile testing. |
