Nanodiamond (ND) surfaces were successfully modified using the ozone treatment and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) solution for use as reinforcement in epoxy nanocomposites. The main purpose of the project was to introduce ozone/TEPA-functionalized NDs within the epoxy matrix to enhance its mechanical properties by improving dispersion and interfacial adhesion. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, epoxy composite specimens reinforced with NDs are prepared at different weight contents of nanoparticles along with three other types of NDs (pristine ND, ozone-functionalized ND, and ozone/TEPA-functionalized ND). For the all nanocomposites developed in this work, the ND contents were found to be optimal at 0.50 wt%. The related ND reinforcing mechanisms were evaluated based on a polished cross-sectional and fracture surface analysis. |
