제목 Use of amino acid fermentation residue as a heavy metal biosorbent
초록 Biosorption has been known to be an economically feasible means for the removal and/or recovery of heavy metals from wastewater, because biosorbents are cheap and abundant.
In this study, Corynebacterium glutamicum biomass, which is a process residue of glutamate mass production, was evaluated as a biosorbent material for the removal of various kinds of heavy metal ions. The functional groups responsible for the binding of heavy metals were identified by means of FTIR study and potentiometric titration. Based upon the nature of functional groups and the characteristics of metal ions in the aqueous phase, the metal affinity order was qualitatively explained. Factors affecting the metal biosorption performance were characterized and optimized in part. The most significant factor was the proton concentration: the metal uptake increased with the pH, reflecting the fact that protons compete for the same functional groups. Finally, the metal uptake performance of C. glutamicum biomass was compared with those of other types of sorbents previously reported.
