Superporous Hydrogels with Fast Swelling and Superabsorbent Properties |

Hydrogels are three dimensional polymer networks that can absorb a significant amount of water but do not dissolve in aqueous media. They have been extensively investigated for biomedical and other applications due to their promising properties. Since most dried hydrogels swell very slowly and take a long time for swelling ranging from several hours to days due to slow absorption of water into glassy hydrogels by diffusion, one of the challenges has been to make a fast swelling and responsive hydrogel. Over the last years, we have developed various hydrogels with both fast and superabsorbent properties. A gas blowing technique was used to generate superporous structures in hydrogels, where the pores are interconnected to each other to make open channels, allowing fast water absorption by capillary force. Here we introduce several chemical and physical methods developed to modify the hydrogel properties in terms of their swelling kinetics, biodegradability, and mechanical properties. |
