Synthesis and characterization of methacrylated hexanoyl glycol chitosan as a photo-crosslinkable thermogelling biomaterial |

Thermogelling polymers that undergo thermo-responsive sol-gel transition in aqueous media have been studied for biomedical application. In this work, we synthesized hexanoyl glycol chitosan (HGC) as a thermogelling polymer by chemical modification of glycol chitosan using hexanoic anhydride. The HGC (36% of degree of substitution, 4wt%) showed a sol-gel transition temperature around 32 ℃. In order to introduce a chemically cross-linkable thermogelling polymer, we synthesized methacrylated HGCs (M-HGCs) by chemical modification of HGC with glycidyl methacrylate. The degree of methacrylation was controlled to have a range of 3.6%~19.5% by varying the feed ratio of reactants. The sol-gel transition temperature of M-HGC slightly decreased due to the presence of hydrophobic methacryl groups. M-HGC could form thermogel and also stable chemical gel with enhanced mechanical property by UV exposure. Photo-crosslinkable thermogelling M-HGC hydrogels would be useful for biomedical application. |
