Electrohydrodynamic simulation and design of electrospinning nozzle |

Electrospinning process is a simple and powerful technique for manufacturing fibers with nanometer-scale diameters. The physics involved in the electrospinning process is complicated and can not be fully explained by an analytical model. In this study, we focus on the electrospinning nozzle. The fluidic behavior of polymer solution near the nozzle is analyzed by an electrohydrodynamic simulation. The VOF (Volume of Fluid) technique is adopted to simulate the free surface of the electrostatically-extracted polymer solution and the electrostatic field around the nozzle is analyzed by solving the Poisson’s equation. Various types of nozzle are simulated and the corresponding electrostatic fields are calculated. Based on the calculation results, the design guidelines for the electrospinning nozzle are discussed. |
