We performed a large number of experiments to understand the capabilities of graphene oxide (GO) films towards origami and kirigami applications and investigate new unexplored phenomena as well. We developed several GO film synthesis methods to control the thickness, morphology, and sheet orientation of the films. We developed several methods to actuate GO films including electrostatic actuation, magnetic field driven actuation, and humidity driven actuation. Using a laser we were able to cut and partially reduce GO films to create kirigami structures suitable for actuation, selectively control which parts of a GO film will be actuated under increased humidity, and to act as guidelines for origami folding. Finally, we investigate a new phenomenon whereby rubbing of a GO film, either while still wet or after drying, leads to an anisotropic orientation of the individual GO sheets within the film. |
