We report on the preparation of multifunctional solvent-free metal nanoparticle (NP) fluids with rheological, magnetic and electrical properties. In this study, the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized using tetra(octylamonium bromide) in toluene were phase-transferred to thiol-functionalized imidazolium-type ionic liquid media (i.e., IL-SH) with low molecular weight (Mw). The resultant magnetic metal fluids (i.e., MIL-SH-AuNPs), which caused by the formation of high spin FeCl4- anions, could be prepared by the addition of FeCl3 powder to metal fluids (i.e., IL-SH-AuNPs). The resulting MIL-SH-AuNP fluids exhibited the extremely low electrical resistance showing the strong magnetic response to externally applied magnetic field, as well as high ionic conductivity because MIL-SH media with a low Mw could effectively decrease the distance of gap between neighboring AuNPs. Furthermore, these properties can be easily controlled by phase transfer times of TOABr-AuNP to IL-SH media. |
