Electrically tunable photonic materials have been of interest for applications in displays. Despite their promising characteristics such as high reflectivity and broad color expression range, their applications in displays have been hampered by angle dependent hue and low stability against electrochemical reaction. Recently, our group previously reported that quasi-amorphous photonic materials are highly sensitive to electrical stimuli and exhibit angle-independent hue. Herein, we report the microcapsulated quasi-amorphous photonic materials which are stable to external applied electric field. The microcapsulated photonic materials were prepared by forming double emulsion in microfluidic channels. The photonic microcapsules provide not only the high physical and electrochemical stability, but also the angle-independent color to the applied voltage. |
