For bioelectronics, there are several important parameters, such as biocompatibility and excellent electrochemical properties. Notably, electrochemical properties and electrical conductivity must be considered for device sensitivity or energy saving. Melanin is a spherical pigment which can be easily found in nature. Melanin is able to form coordinating bonds with metal ions and electrochemical properties can be tuned by coordinated ions. However, property of natural melanin including its spherical shape and complex structure of coordination with various ions cause difficulty in providing connectivity and analyzing the electrochemical properties, respectively. Here, we demonstrate the melanin-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites to investigate the effect of coordination ion to the electrochemical properties and dry-state electrical conductivity of natural melanin based on the four different metal cations of sodium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. |
