Aluminum hydride (AlH3) is a promising candidate for applications to high energetic materials and hydrogen storage. This paper aims to present a simple and easy preparation method. An improved wet chemical method without any boron salt was adopted for the synthesis of alpha-AlH3. The results showed that optimum parameters should be: LiAlH4/AlCl3 molar ratio preferred range being 1/5 to 1/4; a crystallization additive in the second organic solvent being approximately 0.05%-5% by weight; the toluene/ether dilution volume ratio preferred range being 3/1 to 6/1; the volume of ether in the crystallization solution is less than approx. 10% by volume. The XRD spectrum manifested that the final product was alpha-type AlH3. Furthermore, SEM images proved alpha-AlH3 cubic crystals with smooth plains and edges, and the particle size ranges between 20-30μm which are larger than FSU material (10-20μm), therefore indicates quite good stability due to less surface area. DSC and TGA curves agree with our presumption and consistent with others’ results. |
