Physical properties of Carbon Fiber reinforced thermoplastics - Influence of the fiber length |

The influence of the carbon fiber length on physical properties was investigated by means of tensile test, Izod impact test, XPS as well as SEM. The carbon fibers which have difference of length distribution were prepared: Long carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFLFT), chopped carbon fiber pellet(CCFP), and physically chopped carbon fiber by twin extruder(CCFPE). In order to improve the degree of impregnation in CFLFT, specialized impregnation die was applied. In the results of XPS, the oxidation peaks were detected in carbon fiber surface. SEM results indicated that the carbon fibers were dispersed properly in PP matrix. PP-g-MAH was used for compatibilizer between carbon fiber and polypropylene(PP) matrix in CFLFT, CCFP, and CCFPE. The results show that CFLFT which has broad length distribution profile is able to improve the mechanical properties such as impact property and flexural modulus in terms of carbon fiber contents. |
