Complex 2- and 3-d nanopatterning can often be achieved using relatively simple small molecules, dendrimers, star-branched block copolymers, and side-chain liquid crystal polymers. Such patterned materials can lead e.g. to low-dimensional electronic and efficient polymeric ionic conductors. Coating metal nanoparticles with organic liquid-crystal forming molecules is another route to producing systems with novel structures and electro-optical properties, enabling potential applications that include metamaterials for superior lenses, filters and even optical cloaking. Novel methods of structure determination on the mesoscale will also be described. |
