제목 Hydrogen permeation characteristics of Ni37.5Nb27.5Zr25Co5Ta5 alloy amorphous membrane
초록 Hydrogen has potential as an important energy carrier and clean fuel. There is an increasing demand for hydrogen in petroleum refining, petrochemical production and semiconductor processing, as well as in renewable energy related applications such as environment friendly vehicles and fuel cells. Metallic membranes such as made of Pd and Pd alloys, which are well-known nonporous membranes with high perm-selectivity of hydrogen, have been used to separate hydrogen of high purity from various gas mixtures.
Amorphous alloys are promising materials in this aspect because they are known to possess both high strength and good ductility compared with crystalline structures. Recent studies have demonstrated the high performance of Zr- and Ni-based metallic glasses in term of hydrogen permeability and perm-selectivity. Group Va refractory metals, such as Nb and Ta showing large hydrogen solubility and high hydrogen diffusivity are promising for hydrogen permeation membranes. Therefore, we focused our research on amorphous alloys for new membrane materials and found that the Ni37.5Nb27.5Zr25Co5Ta5 amorphous alloy could be one of the most promising candidates for hydrogen separation membrane. The permeability of the Ni37.5Nb27.5Zr25Co5Ta5 1500Å Pd-coated amorphous membrane was characterized by hydrogen permeation experiments in the temperature range 573 to 773 K and pressure of 2 bars. The permeability of the Ni37.5Nb27.5Zr25Co5Ta5 amorphous alloy was found to be larger than 10-8 mol/m s Pa1/2 at 773 K. These results will be discussed based on comparison with ternary and quaternary Ni-Nb-based amorphous alloys.
