Stimuli-responsive nanocarrier for cancer-selective bioimaging and photothermal-chemotherapy combination was designed by core-shell assembly of carbon dot (CD) and triphenylphosphonium-β-cyclodextrin-functionalized hyaluronic acid (f-HA) with inclusion of paclitaxel (PTX). The CD@f-HA-PTX nanocarrier showed extracellular and intracellular targeting capability owing to the presence of HA and TPP in the system, which controlled release of PTX selectively at tumor site. Moreover, this system also showed pH-mediated photothermal effect under NIR light along with time-dependent release of PTX due to the cleavage of boronic ester bond between CD and f-HA-PTX in cancer environment, resulting dual photothermal-chemotherapy towards cancer cell. Thus, this system is promising for cancer-selective bioimaging, also to improve drug delivery system and therapeutic efficacy towards cancer cell.
