Thermo-sensitive polymers have been extensively studied because temperature is an important environment inside the human body. We have investigated the thermo-sensitive polymer gel because of their potential application for in situ coating and bulking materials in blood contact environments. Thermo-sensitive chitosan copolymers were prepared by graft polymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPAAm) onto chitosan. Chitosan-g-PNIPAAm were characterized by fourier transform infrared(FTIR), 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR), X-ray diffraction measurement, and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and tested the solubility to various solvents including water. The gelling temperature was examined by vial inversion method. Chitosan-g-PNIPAAm copolymer was prepared successfully and it formed thermally reversible hydrogel, which exhibits a lower critical solution temperature(LCST) around 32 in aqueous solutions. Chitosan-g-PNIPAAm copolymer was also coated on various materials. The coated surfaces were characterized by water contact angle measurement and fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance(FTIR-ATR). To evaluated blood compatibility, platelet adhesion and human plasma protein adsorption were investigated.
