Pyrolysis polyethylene wax, one of synthetic waxes, was produced by thermal decomposition of polyethylene. Polyethylene wax is widely used in plastics and rubber additives, inks, and hot melt adhesives. However, nonpolar polyethylene wax deteriorates the physical properties of materials containing polyethylene wax sometimes. In this study, polar polyethylene wax was prepared by grafting with acrylic acid. Grafted polyethylene wax was prepared with varying the reaction variables such as reaction temperature, reaction time, initiator, and wax grade. The grafting degree was determined by acid value measurement. As the acrylic acid content increased, the grafting degree increased. The grafting degree increased as both reaction temperature and time increased due to the increased formation of active sites on polyethylene chains. The half-life of initiator played an important role in grafting degree. |
