Enhancement of Mechanical Properties of Phosphate Based Transparent Glass Materials |

In this study, a phosphate based transparent glass material was fabricated by sol-gel method and subsequent thermal treatment. Calcium nitrate tetra hydrate and phosphoric acid were mixed in methanol and homogenized. After mixing the two components by drop-wise while under constant stirring, the mixture was aged for completion of condensation for 24 hours. Subsequently, the aged solution was heated at 1000C to remove solvent and obtained a white gel. The moist gel was sintered without any further treatment to form the glassy materials. Sintering temperature was varied from 8000C to 12000C at 1000C intervals. However, the mechanical properties were low compared with the value of cortical bone. Therefore, fine ZrO¬2 powder was inserted to enhance them. The synthesized glassy material was characterized by SEM, TEM and XRD for morphology and composition. The detail material properties like density, compressive strength, hardness, fracture toughness were investigated. |
