In this study, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-patterned polystyrene (PS) substrates were prepared by ion beam contact lithography to control the adhesion of mammalian cells. PAA films spin-coated on PS substrates were selectively irradiated with accelerated proton ions through a pattern mask, and then developed with deionized water to generate well-defined PAA patterns. Cells were found to be adhered and proliferated favorably onto hydrophilic PAA regions separated by hydrophobic PS regions on the PAA-patterned PS substrates, and thereby leading to the formation of well-defined cell patterns. |
