Carbon foam(CFms) is widely used as heat exchanger, high temperature thermal insulator due to their high thermal stability and thermal conductivity. However, CFms have a disadvantage of low mechanical strength due to their large porosity. In this study, mesophase pitch based CFms was prepared using hydrogel template method. Graphite was added as a filler to enhance mechanical and thermal properties. As graphite was added, crystalline thickness (Lc) of CFms increased about 11%, also the apparent density increased about 4%. It was considered that addition of graphite is affect to the pore size (porosity) that can change the crystallinity and the density of CFms. These enhanced crystallinity and density gave rise to thermal conductivity improvement of 59%. Finally, the compressive strength increased up to 120%. |
