A SSZ-13, the type of CHA zeolite can separate CO2 from larger molecules such as N2 or CH4 due to the differences of molecular size. However, the methods to control the non-zeolitic defects of SSZ-13 membrane are insufficient. Here, we demonstrate that rapid thermal processing (RTP) of as-synthesized SSZ-13 films tunes their microstructural defect properties and increases their ability to CO2 separation. The maximum CO2/N2 separation factor (SF) at 30 °C increased from ~2.9 to ~4.8 because defective region was reduced by RTP. In addition, the CO2/N2 SF of RTP treated SSZ-13 membrane in wet condition also increased from ~4.3 (under dry condition) to ~10.1 (under wet condition) at 50 °C. From fluorescence confocal optical microscopy analysis, we could reveal that the reduced defect size improved CO2 permeance and selectivity after RTP. |
