Supported Acidic Ionic Liquid on Mesoporous Silica for the Hydrolysis of Red Macroalgae to Sugars |

A supported acidic ionic liquid based on the anion of phosphotungstic acid (H2PW12O40-) was synthesized via covalent attachment to mesoporous silica, SBA-15. The catalyst was characterized using various techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy, small and wide-angle X-ray scattering, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption and scanning electron microscopic analysis to confirm its successful preparation. Moreover, the presence of the heteropolyacid anion was confirmed through surface acidity measurements and tungsten content determination using ICP-AES. The hydrolytic activity of the prepared catalyst, termed as SBA-IL-HPW was demonstrated in the hydrolysis of red macroalgae, G. amansii and model compounds, agarose and cellobiose. Reaction conditions such as catalyst amount, time and temperature were varied for optimum sugar production from renewable resources.
