제목 Formation of pH Responsive Polymer Decorated 5CB Droplets Using the Technique of Microfluidics
초록 Herein we report the formation of monodisperse liquid crystal (5CB) droplets decorated by an amphiphilic block copolymer (PAA-b-LC11P) by using a microfluidic device. The LC molecules were dispersed as monodisperse droplets in an aqueous phase containing the polymer. The assembly of this polymer at the interfaces of aqueous dispersions of LC droplets was achieved by the adsorption of polymer from the aqueous phase. We demonstrate that the presence of this polymer at the interface of LC droplets can trigger the ordering transitions of the LC molecule when contacted with pH buffer solutions. The characterization of the decorated droplets by polarized optical microscopy revealed the general spherical shape of the polymer coated LC droplets with radial and bipolar orientations when treated with pH 12 and 2, respectively. The results of this study give an approach that could be used to tailor the properties of dispersed LC microdroplets in a broad range of applied and fundamental contexts.
